Texas Covered is the largest event of its kind in Texas and brings together decision-makers from across the health care spectrum — from major health plans, providers, and regulators, to legislators, journalists, academics, and more.
This year’s conference featured a high-level roster of dynamic speakers coming together to brainstorm and discuss ways to achieve greater value, affordability, transparency, and accessibility in health care.
Curative’s CEO, Fred Turner, had the opportunity to appear on a panel with other CEOs in the health care space to discuss “The Path Forward For Health Care Coverage.” The panel was moderated by Jared Landis, Managing Director at The Advisory Board, David Milich, CEO - Texas/Oklahoma and Individual at United Healthcare, Alessa Quane, Executive Vice President and Chief Insurance Officer at Oscar, and Jim Springfield, President of BCBSTX.

The panel focused on three main discussion topics: What is happening, what do you expect to happen, and what should be happening?
Here’s our take on those three issues and how our work at Curative plays a role in solving them:
What is happening in health care?
Traditional health insurance plans have a myriad of shortcomings that prevent patients from receiving the care they need and deserve. Many health plans are designed around a deeply flawed cost-sharing model that drives unnecessarily high costs with a lack of transparency about out-of-pocket costs for patients. Current plans are also riddled with unnecessary expenses like copays and deductibles. This results in patients only seeking care when they get sick or are unwell instead of seeking preventive and holistic care. By waiting until health problems get worse, patients have no option but to seek expensive care options versus tackling the problem in advance. This leaves many patients with immense medical debt and distrust in the health system.
What do you expect to happen?
Traditional health insurance plans are designed to have their members only utilize the plan if they are sick or unwell. If no action is taken, we’ll continue to see health outcomes unmet, skyrocketing out-of-pocket costs for care, and patients reluctant to use their benefits.
What should be happening?
The entire health care industry - patients, providers, employers, insurers, and payers - has to work together to build a better health care system that actually promotes health. We’re stuck in a system that doesn't work for us. We cannot keep the same health insurance plan offerings in place and expect different results that would truly benefit members. To create a future where people are utilizing their health benefits for preventative measures and overall becoming healthier, products and perceptions must shift radically. A health plan must arise that actually works in favor of the members.
How is Curative transforming health care coverage and wellness?
In our work, starting in Austin, we’re trying to accomplish just that — creating a healthier future. Curative recently launched a new health insurance plan designed to address several critical issues affecting traditional employer-based health care coverage. By removing many of the barriers to access and care with a no copay, no deductible health insurance plan, we believe we can significantly impact the health of our members. For only one monthly premium, this first-of-its-kind health plan will offer free and unlimited access to a high-quality PPO network as well as other personalized health and wellness benefits.
Curative’s unique $0 deductibles, $0 copays, and $0 out-of-pocket costs for all in-network care is delivering true cost transparency while breaking down unnecessary barriers to care. Health care should not be a reason a person or their family falls into debt, and medical debt is one of the leading financial barriers for Americans.
With all in-network care and prescriptions covered with no out-of-pocket costs, the plan helps people focus on achieving good health rather than what they would have to pay for each health care need. In order to qualify for $0 out-of-pocket costs, members are asked to complete a “Baseline Visit,” which combines a preventative health assessment with a true health plan onboarding that aims to improve members’ health literacy and understanding of how to maximize their plan’s benefits.
Curative’s plan is designed to remove barriers to care and empower members to engage in total well-being through proactive relationship development and actively managing their care.
We want to thank the Texas Covered Health Conference for allowing us to engage with other health leaders in Texas, share our perspectives on the future of health care, and demonstrate our commitment to building a healthier tomorrow, together.
