Curative Offers Testing at Los-Angeles-Based High School—First of Many School-Based Testing Sites to Come
LOS ANGELES, CA — October 13, 2020 — COVID-19 testing startup Curative, Inc. today announced the deployment of a new drive-thru testing site at Dalzell Lance High School adding 350-500 tests per day to Los Angeles. The launch is in partnership with Camino Nuevo Charter Academy, which has seven public charter schools across the city and serves a largely Latinx population.
“As teachers, parents, and guardians across the country continue to navigate the impact of the pandemic on their children’s education, Curative seeks to be a resource for schools and their surrounding communities,” said Fred Turner, CEO, and co-founder of Curative. “We’re proud to partner with Camino Nuevo Charter Academy to make testing more accessible. Our unique, self-administered oral fluid swab COVID-19 test offers a painless, simple option with quick 24-48-hour results.”
Curative offers an oral-fluid swab testing—an alternative method to nasopharyngeal or brain swabs in testing for COVID-19. The self-administered oral fluid swab involves having the person cough first, which releases virus from the upper and lower respiratory tract. The virus is then caught in the saliva, the patient then swabs the inside of their cheeks and the roofs of their mouths. Once complete, the patient seals their test within a secure container and returns it to a medical professional to be administered in the lab. The entire Curative test is done without having to come into close contact with others, therefore eliminating the need for personal protective equipment (PPE) changes. The sample collection process can be viewed here.
“As an organization dedicated to protecting the wellbeing of students and families, we are proud to partner with Curative to make testing more accessible in our school neighborhoods,” said Adriana Abich, CEO of Camino Nuevo Charter Academy. “We know that underserved communities and people of color have been disproportionately affected by the coronavirus, especially here in the Westlake-MacArthur Park area. By opening this testing site at our flagship high school, we hope to help remove the stigma of testing, slow the spread of the virus, and save lives. It’s a service that will not only help make our communities healthier, but it will also make all the difference for families.”
