Meet the Nurses on the Frontlines of the Pandemic: Curative Celebrates National Nurses Week

This National Nurses Week, Curative thanks all of the nurses who have braved the frontlines during the COVID-19 pandemic to serve our communities. Often the first to arrive at testing and vaccination sites and the last to leave, nurses are integral to our work. Nurses have brought comfort in moments of doubt and fear, and have remained steadfast despite unexpected challenges as we navigate this pandemic together. We admire their dedication, sacrifice, and strength now more than ever.
Here are some of the hardworking nurses at Curative who have played a role in ending the COVID-19 pandemic.
Lorelie Yujuico, BSN, RN- National Clinical Director of Nursing
What inspired you to become a nurse?
As a child, I’ve developed an early passion for helping people. This just came naturally for me to go into Nursing because it gives me so much joy knowing I’m making a difference in people’s lives. I love the feeling of being able to treat and heal for it touches me to the very core. I feel my best when I’m serving people in this capacity.
How has your experience been as a frontline nurse during the COVID-19 pandemic?
It’s been an amazing experience leading a small group of nurses, 20 to be exact, in Los Angeles in December of 2020 to now having about 1600 nurses nationwide. It’s only been 5 months but it feels like forever especially when we just passed 1.5 million vaccinations administered by Curative! It makes me feel accomplished knowing that Curative Nurses are helping eradicate COVID-19.

What inspired me to become a nurse?
Since about freshman year of high school, I loved learning about how the body works and was really eager to jump into the medical field to make healthcare better. I realized early on in my career that I really had a passion for quality, workflow redesign and process optimization.
How has your experience been as a frontline nurse during the COVID-19 pandemic?
Honestly, this has been one of the most incredible experiences. COVID is terrible, but I will forever be grateful for how the pandemic enabled me to jump into new arenas with some many amazing people across all aspects of healthcare, community organizations, government, and more. It all started with a single testing site, then a mass testing site, then a mobile unit, then hospital employee vaccinations, then county first responder vaccinations, and state mass vaccinations and now national mass vaccinations. I am so unbelievably proud of the team that I am a part of, so many caring, dedicated, and wonderful clinicians and others! Also, because of COVID, I met my fiancé and we will be getting married June 12!
Tariq Afandi, LVN
What inspired you to become a nurse?
I always knew I wanted to work in the medical field but I just wasn’t sure what my specialty would be until I witnessed firsthand the nurses taking care of my grandmother. The way they cared and valued her voice as a patient showed me that nursing is about patient advocacy and making the patient feel safe. I consider myself to be a very compassionate person and nursing has allowed me to be able to share that with my patients.
How has your experience been as a frontline nurse during the COVID-19 pandemic?
My experience being a nurse during this pandemic has been very challenging because this virus is very unpredictable. Every day brought a new challenge. But with new challenges also came the fulfilling experiences and how I get to be part of the bigger picture of helping control the pandemic and trying to return some normalcy to my patients’ lives.
Shatara S. Leonard, RN, Lead Prep Vaccination Nurse
What inspired you to become a nurse?
Growing up I watched my grandfather, a pastor and esteemed educator, serve the community with love and enthusiastic commitment. I knew that I also wanted to serve my community and in the 6th grade I discovered nursing at the career fair, along with the help of Encyclopedia Britannica. My innate love of science, mathematics, and the gift of gab led me to the United States Air Force to fulfill my calling!
How has your experience been as a frontline nurse during the COVID-19 pandemic?
As a nurse on the frontlines of the pandemic, I have been devastated by the large amount of illness and death that has surrounded us globally. I have challenged myself and others to dive deeper to resist selfishness and fear and live even greater in love and compassion with nurturing empathy.
Carolina Olivero, RN, Lead Prep Vaccination Nurse
What inspired you to become a nurse?
I’ve always felt called to care for others whether it was physically, emotionally or spiritually. I wanted to do something in my career that was challenging while devoting myself to help make a change in people’s lives daily. I am proud to have the ability to bring understanding and peace during what can be a confusing or difficult time in someone’s life.
How has your experience been as a frontline nurse during the COVID-19 pandemic?
I would have never thought I’d start my nursing career during a global crisis but I am fortunate to use my talents and skills to help those in need. It has been a challenging year, adapting to changes daily and not knowing what unforeseen adversity may arise. It is a true honor knowing I am making a significant contribution to my community.
